I had a plan (contract Solution Architect) when I resigned after 16 years of permanent employment, and haven't regretted it for a moment since (2 years and counting) - but it's a big, big step. I made the choice primarily because of increasing stress - needed something to change.

Because I've been there, I've got nothing but respect for those who've had the courage (and ability) to change - but it's important to recognise that sometimes staying takes a very different type of courage. A Japanese expression comes to mind (I can't recall the source) - "Death is light as a feather, duty heavy as a stoneā€¦"
